Project Overview

Project Overview & Needs Assessment

SusEarth is carrying out evidence based research on Community Food Security and Livelihood for Sustainable Agriculture, Improved Yield, and Income interventions with a concentration on the smallholder farmers of Edo State. The objective is to assess the living conditions and income of the rural smallholder farmers via their farming activities and yield. From the engagement between SusEarth and the targeted smallholder farmers, it was discovered that the demographic faces chronic food insecurity resulting from low-yielding, disease-prone pepper varieties.

Strategic Intervention: Hybrid F1 Pepper

To address this challenge, an intervention was designed to restructure the farming value chain from seed to income by introducing hybrid F1 pepper seeds. This is paired with structured training and monitoring systems to advance the SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) goal. The project is implemented targeting two groups: institutional entities and the rural community.

Research, Implementation & Scaling

Research on the nursing and farming of the hybrid F1 pepper is currently ongoing. This research project compares the yield with that of local pepper varieties. The results will be applied to smallholder farmer communities by distributing the hybrid seeds. This empowers farmers to increase yield and improve their livelihoods, engaging them as co-designers of their own agricultural future rather than passive beneficiaries. The project is currently at the working and scaling phase.
