Project Overview

Strategic Context & Urban Resilience

In commemoration of World Environment Day 2026, the Sustainable Earth Development Foundation (SusEarth) participated in a high-level advocacy summit powered by the Centre for Clean Energy and Environment Advocacy Initiative, in strategic partnership with the Edo State Ministry of Environment & Sustainability. Operating under the central theme of “Climate Action” and the critical sub-theme “Urbanization and Climate Change: Building Resilient Cities for a Sustainable Future,” the event convened key policymakers, environmental scientists, and urban planners.

Keynote Address: Carbon Decarbonization & Adaptation

Dr. Godwin Uyi Ojo, Executive Director of SusEarth, delivered the principal keynote address focusing on systemic adaptation and mitigation strategies against the intensifying “blanket effect” of global climate change. Dr. Ojo emphasized the critical role of governmental policy in driving carbon decarbonization, highlighting the necessary global transition toward electric vehicles and renewable energy frameworks.

He advocated for aggressive mitigation—cutting emissions directly at the source of production—while simultaneously expanding natural carbon sinks through extensive tree-planting initiatives. Crucially, Dr. Ojo framed the climate crisis not merely as an existential threat, but as a transitional development opportunity capable of generating sustainable employment and lifting vulnerable demographics above the poverty line.

Academic Perspectives on Environmental Toxicity

The academic discourse was expanded by Prof. Cyril Otoikhian, who addressed the proliferation of anthropogenic heavy metals (such as mercury) within local environments. His analysis reinforced the necessity of rigorous environmental monitoring and highlighted the enduring resilience required to safeguard human populations against man-made ecological contaminants.

Policy Panels: Waste Management & Clean Infrastructure

The summit culminated in an executive panel session featuring the Managing Director of the Edo State Waste Management Board, the CEO of CNG Auto-gas, and municipal environmental heads. The dialogue centered on modernizing waste management protocols and accelerating the statewide adoption of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as a transitional clean fuel. The panel concluded with a unanimous resolution on civic responsibility, urging an immediate halt to toxic waste burning and enforcing mandatory registration with regulated sanitary waste management collectors to preserve urban air quality.
